Advice for Parents and Carers
If your child has been referred to Occupational Therapy, we know it can sometimes feel overwhelming. But you are not alone—there’s lots of support available, and we’re here to help guide you through this journey. Occupational Therapy (OT) focuses on helping children develop the skills they need for everyday life, and as parents and carers, you play a key role in supporting their progress.
Here’s some helpful advice on how you can best support your child:
Understanding Your Child’s Needs
Every child’s journey is unique. OT addresses a wide range of challenges, from physical and sensory issues to difficulties with learning, self-care, or social skills. Ask your Occupational Therapist to explain your child’s specific needs and goals so you can feel confident in how to support them. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek clarification on your child’s therapy plan.
Create a Supportive Home Environment
Making simple changes at home can have a big impact on your child’s progress. Depending on your child’s needs, this might mean setting up an organized homework station, using sensory tools (like fidget toys or noise-cancelling headphones), or breaking tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Your OT will offer recommendations specific to your child, and you can work together to create an environment where your child can thrive.
Encourage Independence
One of the main goals of OT is to help children become more independent. Encourage your child to practice new skills in everyday situations, such as getting dressed, brushing their teeth, or helping with small household tasks. Celebrate their successes, no matter how small, and provide gentle guidance when things are tough. Building confidence takes time, but small steps can lead to big improvements.
Build in Time for Play
Play is an essential part of learning for children, and it’s often a central part of OT. Encourage your child to engage in play that helps develop their motor, social, or problem-solving skills. Activities like building with blocks, arts and crafts, or playing with sensory-friendly toys can support their development in a fun, stress-free way.
Stay Connected with the OT Team
Your child’s progress depends on teamwork. Stay in touch with your Occupational Therapist to track progress, share observations, and update goals as needed. Don’t hesitate to share any concerns or celebrate milestones—your feedback is key to ensuring your child’s therapy plan is effective and adaptable to their changing needs.
Take Care of Yourself
Caring for a child with OT needs can sometimes be challenging, and it’s important to take care of your own well-being too. Remember, it’s okay to seek support from family, friends, or other parents who understand what you’re going through. Many communities also offer parent groups or online forums where you can share experiences and advice.
