The Stoma Care study day is available for Clinical and Care Support Workers working in Health and Social Partnerships in Lothian.
The aim of the course is to provide participants with knowledge, awareness and practical skills to enable them to support individuals with the day to day care of their stoma.
Please note this course is not suitable for registered nurses.
Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the session participants will:

- Understand the basic anatomy involved in stoma formation
- Describe the different types of stoma and which appliance to use
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of stoma care
- Describe a healthy stoma and when to escalate concerns
- Have an awareness of common problems with stomas
- An understanding of the psychological impact of stoma formation
- Demonstrate practical skills of how to change a stoma bag
Structure of Learning Session
- Participants will be Health and Social Care employees in Clinical and Care Support Workers roles.
- Sessions are delivered by NHS Lothian Clinical Education Team and NHS Lothian Stoma Team
- Face to face underpinning knowledge and practical learning and education session
- Day Session 09.00 – 14.00 (5 hours)
- Delivered in Comely Bank Centre clinical classroom using mannikins for practical activities

Assessment of Competency
Depending on training and/or skill to be undertaken there may be a requirement for assessment of workers’ competency.
Competency assessment promotes safe working practice and supports individuals to get the right care, at the right time, in the right place by appropriately trained and competent staff.
