July 2023 – Meaningful Connection, Self-Evaluation Tool

The Care Inspectorate have launched a self-evaluation tool, which adult and older people’s Care Homes can use to help assess how they are doing in supporting meaningful connection for all people experiencing care.

It is also available at the Care Inspectorate’s Visiting, meaningful connection, Anne’s Law section of the Care Inspectorate website. Here you will also find links to the Anne’s Law factsheet, literature review, and previous webinar recordings.

May 2023 – Guidance for the use of face masks in Care Homes

The guidance for use of facemasks within social care settings has been updated. Please see Coronavirus (COVID-19) face masks and face coverings guidance withdrawal: letter for further information.

The use of face coverings/masks should follow where there is an Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) need to do so or following local health protection team advice and should be stood down when no longer required.

Where an individual would prefer to wear a covering/mask out with these scenarios, we would expect this to be an exception, and not normalised for all across a setting. As per the guidance, discussions with managers around use should take place and be documented.

At all times use, appropriate IPC practices should be taken in regards to wearing the mask as per the National Infection Prevention and Control Manual and Care Home National Infection Prevention and Control Manual. Services should also continue to follow guidance from Public Health Scotland for social, community and residential care settings.

March 2023 – Updated guidance from Public Health Scotland

Public Health Scotland has just published the updated Covid-19 guidance for social, community and residential care settings – version 2.6.

The key updates in version 2.6 are:

  • the title of this guidance reverts back to its original “Covid-19 information and guidance for social, community, and residential care settings”, although it also covers prison settings (as version 2.5)
  • clarifications to the advice on the use of face masks in the PPE and face coverings section.
  • advice on essential visiting updated, including now examples of circumstances and factors that HPTs may consider when moving to “essential visiting” during an outbreak and additional advice for services on how to support this.
  • changes specific to prison settings.

March 2023 – Framework to Enable Competency Assessment Across Health and Social Care in Lothian

The Framework to Enable Competency Assessment Across Health and Social Care in Lothian has been developed and authorised for use across all Health & Social Care services in Lothian.

The Framework was developed under the Lothian Care Academy umbrella to support governance arrangements, standardise the process, and promote ‘best practice’ with competency assessment across services.

Fundamentally competency assessment can happen if a Service Level Agreement is developed.
