Person-Centred Approach to Dementia Care

This new learning opportunity is open to people working in Care Homes and Care at Home services across Lothian Health and Social Care Partnerships. It replaces the Understanding and Responding to the Needs of People Living with Dementia course

This blended programme of learning comprises of: Completion of specified e-Learning prior to attending a four hour face to face session.

Learning outcomes include:

•Develop understanding of memory formation and how we use our memory in daily life

•Review the use of person-centred care approaches in needs assessment and the support of people with dementia

•Explore how dementia affects the person’s ability to communicate

•Consider the impact of memory loss on the person with dementia’s reality

•Discuss both stress and distress as symptoms of dementia

Pre course Activities:

Prior to attending all participants must have undertaken the following three activities provided below, within 6 weeks of attending the face to face session.

  • 1. Watch Alzheimer’s Research Video
  • 2. Read the World Health Organisation’s Dementia Fact Sheet
  • 3. Completed DEMENTIA INFORMED PRACTICE LEVEL on TURAS

There will be a Questions and Answers session at the start of the face to face session, to assess understanding and enable any queries rising from these learning activities to be addressed.

1. Alzheimer’s Research Video

The video is 4.09 minutes long. with a useful overview of how changes in the brain lead to dementia. The main types and their key symptoms

2. World Health Organisation – Dementia Fact Sheet

This fact sheet offers a comprehensive overview of dementia, including statistics, signs & symptoms and risk factors. Access the webpage by clicking the green button:

3. TURAS – Dementia Informed Practice Learning

Complete the ‘Once for Scotland’ Dementia Informed Practice Level on TURAS.

This learning resources comprises of 5 short videos.

To access this resources you will need a TURAS account – this is easy to do and anyone working in health and social in Scotland can create their own account.
