The dietetic team are able to provide bespoke training to all care home staff involved in supporting people living in care homes, to have a healthy and nutritious diet.
This bespoke training is delivered face to face, within the care home in short 1 hour sessions.
Training topics include:
- Screening for Malnutrition using MUST
- First line nutritional management for residents at risk of malnutrition
- How to provide a fortified diet and maximise nutritional intake
Bespoke training is designed for all care home staff members: including support workers, kitchen staff, care assistants, nurses and mangers.

In addition to face to face bespoke training above, the dietetic team have developed a training video and supporting information pack which can be accessed below.
Training Video – Nutritional Support within the Care Home
We have developed an online video outlining the basics of nutritional support within the care home. Topics include :
- malnutrition and screening
- food fortification techniques
- snack ideas
- case studies
- worked examples of how to calculate MUST score
Resource Pack – Nutritional Support within the Care Home
The online training video above is supported by a resource pack containing lots of valuable information and additional topics, including how to support people with food, fluid and nutrition. Considerations include:
- People living with dementia
- People living with swallowing difficulties
- Hydration,
- Oral nutritional supplements
- Recipes.
The dietetic team are responsible for all Lothian care homes, including local authority and independent homes, apart from Edinburgh local authority care homes, who have a dedicated dietitian.
