This part of the Leadership pathway is all about developing your personal leadership style even further, and how you may support others in the workplace. The Learning is broken into three key areas as before – Click through the green bars to access them below

Leading yourself

Leading others

Leading within an organisation.
Leading Yourself

This section is all about self leadership.
In this section you will find one module looking at self leadership and integrity alongside a resource developed by NHS Lothian and Animate about leadership.
The resource has lots of information in it as well as sessions you can facilitate with your team to explore leadership in more detail.
It also has bits of theory throughout so you can expand your leadership even further.

Reflection
Self leadership is important and understanding ourselves is an important factor in understanding our leadership. Have a think about the following:
- How do you demonstrate critical awareness of your own strengths and limitations and the impact of your behaviour on others?
- How do you adapt to different people and situations while remaining authentic?
- How do you take responsibility for your own emotions and prejudices and understand how these can affect your judgment and behaviour?

Unconscious Bias
You may find it useful to complete an unconscious bias test if you haven’t done already. These can be good to reflect on your own beliefs and ideas and think about ourselves in a new light.
If you took the test were there any surprises for you?
In the Developing Section we highlighted the following courses as being suitable for aspiring managers in social care, if you haven’t already explored them, they do provide additional resources and learning:
Leading Others

This section has been split into two themes.
One is around leading people, and some of the challanges that can arise while doing so.
The second theme is all about risk and change

Challenges in Leadership
you may already have many skills and examples of when you have managed difficult situations, the resources below are provided for you to explore further:
Risk and Change
With any new project or new initiative, there will be risk and challenges alongside the benefits. Otherwise the change would be easy.
While completing these modules, have a think about a time where a change didn’t go as planned. What did you do? How did you overcome it?

Reflection
Have a think about how you lead change and others at work. We know change can be unsettling for a lot of people. Reflect on the following:
- How do you tolerate uncertainty and the risk of failure while supporting creativity, innovation and experimentation within teams and services?
- How do you ensure that staff retain a clear focus on people who use services, families and carers while adapting to change and discontinuity?
- How do you provide a range of channels for staff to provide feedback on change?
- Is there anything you could implement or already do to keep staff, and the people you care for informed of changes? What works? What doesn’t work?
Leading within an Organisation

This section has been split into two themes.
The first one is around transformation.
The second theme is all about the practicalities of being a leader

Transformation:
Consider the following questions:
How can we all work together to solve some of the big issues in health and social care?
Why is working across boundaries important?
Transformation is a complex topic – the following modules may support you in developing an understanding to the previous questions:

Practicalities of being a leader:
How can you plan effectively and make sure quality is at the heart of everything we do?
Two SSSC Open Badges explore this question further:
Reflections
What networks do you use for change and sharing across organisations?
What information do you need?
Where could you get this?
How do you foster a good working relationship across different organisations?
