PLEASE NOTE: Confirmation of Death replaced Nurse Verification of Expected Death following the Scottish Government Confirmation of death circular (2017) and Framework for implementation (2018) and the development of additional resources to support implementation by NHS Education for Scotland.
Training aims
The online training session for Confirmation of Death is designed to support registered healthcare professionals who will be confirming death as part of their role within their current area of work.
The skill of confirming death includes the competency to carry out a series of physiological checks to clinically assess whether someone has died. The registered healthcare professional will also need excellent communication skills and knowledge of National policy and procedure for confirming death. All of these will be discussed and covered on the study day.
What you will learn
- About your role and responsibilities as a registered healthcare professional undertaking confirmation of death.
- The difference between confirmation of death and certification of death.
- About your own accountability, recognising limits of competence.
- About National guidance for undertaking confirmation of death, to be aware of local standard operating procedures, and NHSLothian’s confirmation of death policy and procedure.
- Where to find approved online resources referenced in the program.
