Palliative and End-of-Life Care Training

There are a variety of palliative and end-of-life care training sessions available for staff working in Care Homes, Care at Home, Community, and Acute Services.

Please see below for details on these courses, which are delivered through the NHS Lothian Clinical Education Team, along with booking information.

Palliative & End of Life Care for HCSWs in Community & Care Home settings

Offering an inviting, friendly environment that supports meaningful learning and personal development for Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs) in Community and Care Home settings to:


•Improve the understanding of palliative care for HCSWs and apply it to their practice.
• Develop skills for compassionate conversations with patients and families about end-of-life topics.
• Encourage a comprehensive approach in nursing that addresses the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of dying patients.
• Help HCSWs assist patients and families in making informed choices about their care.
• Promote collaboration among healthcare team members in providing end-of-life care.
• Equip HCSWs with strategies to handle the emotional challenges of end-of-life caregiving.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify key palliative care principles and recognise common challenges faced by dying patients, along with management strategies.
• Practice effective communication techniques, including active listening, for discussing end-of-life care.
• Assess patient needs and implement individualised care plans addressing all aspects of patient wellbeing using a holistic framework.
• Support discussions with patients and families regarding Future Care Planning end of life preferences.
• Communicate patient needs and care plans effectively within the healthcare team.
• Identify coping mechanisms and self-care practices to maintain their resilience in emotionally taxing end-of-life situations.

Palliative and End of life Care for RNs in Community & Care Home settings

• Enhance Knowledge and Skills: Improve the understanding of palliative care for Registered Nurses and apply it to their practice.
• Improve Communication: Develop skills for compassionate conversations with patients and families about end-of-life topics.
• Promote Holistic Care: Encourage a comprehensive approach in nursing that addresses the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of dying patients.
• Support Decision-Making: Help Registered Nurses assist patients and families in making informed choices about their care.
• Facilitate Teamwork: Promote collaboration among healthcare team members in providing end-of-life care.
• Prepare for Challenges: Equip Registered Nurses with strategies to handle the emotional challenges of end-of-life caregiving.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Palliative and End-of-Life Symptom Management for RNs in Community & Care Home settings


This full day, face-to-face session will engage Registered Nurses in Community and Care Home settings on how to:
•Provide Registered Nurses in Community and Care Home Settings with a comprehensive understanding of palliative and end-of-life symptom management based on the Scottish Palliative Care Guidelines.
•Equip participants with skills to recognise and assess common symptoms experienced by patients who are palliative and end-of-life.
• Explore effective pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for managing distressing symptoms.
• Emphasise the importance of addressing not only physical symptoms but also emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of patients and their families/carers.
• Engage participants in collaborative care planning exercises to real-life scenarios.
• Enhance communication skills critical for discussing prognosis, treatment options, and goals of care with patients and families.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Assess and Manage Symptoms: Identify common symptoms throughout the palliative journey as well as at the end of life. Use assessment tools to measure the severity of symptoms and create personalised plans to manage these symptoms effectively.
  • Familiarise themselves with the Scottish Palliative Care Guidelines and utilise this for effective symptom management.
  • Communicate Clearly and Collaborate: Use clear communication with patients and families about care goals and preferences while working together with healthcare teams to develop complete care plans.
  • Collaborate in Group Settings: Work effectively in multidisciplinary teams to create comprehensive care plans that address the complexity of palliative and end-of-life care.

Breaking Bad News in a Clinical Setting (RN/HCSW)

This half day, face to face session for Registered Nurses and Healthcare Support Workers includes facilitated discussion’s where we will:

•Discuss the challenges faced when breaking bad news

•Identify strategies to overcome these challenges

•Demonstrate key communication skills

•Establish when to escalate

Registered Nurses who are training, or have trained to be non-medical prescribers

Non-medical Prescribing in Palliative Care

This course is aimed at staff who are active or training towards being independent non-medical prescribers and involved caring and prescribing for patients requiring palliative care. It will go through the decision-making process of choosing and changing opioid medications and calculating doses of breakthrough medications. There will be a focus on different pain’s, total pain, as well as recognising toxicity. There will be a refresher on prescribing controlled drugs, reviewing compatibilities, and using the Scottish Palliative Care Guidelines.

Half of the session will be group work to discuss scenarios therefore it is essential you have access to a device that has a camera and microphone

Learning Outcomes:

  • Gain knowledge and confidence on the decision-making process for prescribing palliative medications
  • Recognise different pains, total pain and toxicity and discuss the management
  • Refresh your memory of the prescribing process and the use of the Scottish Palliative Care Guidelines
  • Build a support network of non-medical prescriber colleagues
  • Discuss and practise prescribing palliative medications
