The Bladder and Bowel Nursing Team offer the following training sessions. Care Home staffs are welcome to access these sessions in order to help them with assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of bladder and bowel dysfunction.

How to book a delegate onto a bladder and bowel training session:
Please send an email to loth.bbntraining@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk with the following information.
Course name and date, delegate name, job title (registered or non-registered), care home details including an email address, contact telephone number and name of care home manager.

Adult Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction for non registered nursing staff
- Monday 02 June 2025 (11:00-13:00) face to face – Houston Seminar Room, St John’s Hospital

Learning outcomes
- Recall the basic anatomy of the urinary and digestive systems.
- Describe how bladder and bowel health can be promoted.
- Understand their role in assessing bladder and bowel dysfunction
- Know the common causes of bladder/bowel dysfunction (including incontinence).
- Identify how to select suitable absorbent bodyworn pads.
- Understand how to fit bodyworn pads correctly.
- Describe how to apply a sheath.
- Identify how to care for an indwelling urinary catheter.
- Understand limitations of role and processes to report to registered nurse.

Online presentation will enable the learners to:
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the large bowel.
- Identify types of bowel dysfunction.
- Describe treatment and/or management options as appropriate.
- Discuss digital rectal examination, digital remove of faecal, digital rectal stimulation, bowel irrigation and legal issues.
- Be aware of products to help and manage bowel dysfunction if appropriate.
- Understand onward referrals process.

- Describe treatment options in relation to the different types of bladder dysfunction.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the ability to plan appropriate care and implement interventions.
