You (or your child) may be referred to a team who have particular skills to help you (or your child).

These include:

The CAMHS Intellectual Disability Service

The CAMHS Intellectual Disability Service works with children and young people who:

  • are between 0 to 18 years old
  • and have significant developmental delay or a learning disability (with or without autism)
  • and have mental health or complex behavioural problems.

We also work closely with and support families and carers. As well as an outpatient service, we also offer specialist Early Years and Intensive Treatment Services.

The Paediatric Psychology and Liaison Service (PPALS)

The PPALS Service works with children and young people who:

  • are under the care of a consultant at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People
  • and have a physical health condition
  • and are experiencing psychological or behavioural issues related to their physical health condition
  • and the difficulties impact significantly on their day-to-day functioning (e.g. disrupted school attendance/home life, relationship difficulties, clear signs of psychological distress or mental health issues relating to the young person’s physical symptoms)

The Meadows – CAMHS Specialist Trauma Team

The Meadows is a specialist trauma service within CAMHS. We support children and young people (0–18 years old), and the adults who care for them, when they are experiencing emotional, behavioural, or mental health difficulties after traumatic experiences.

We understand that trauma can affect every part of a young person’s life.

Our team works in a gentle, compassionate and trauma‑informed way, recognising that healing happens best when people feel safe, respected, and understood.

Who We Support

We focus on a specific range of trauma experiences. We work with children, young people and families who have been affected by:

Child Sexual Abuse or Sexual Assault

This includes support for children and young people who have experienced, or have reported, sexual abuse or assault. We also offer support to non‑abusing parents and carers, recognising how vital they are in a child’s healing.

Inappropriate or Problematic Sexual Behaviour

We offer consultation, assessment and intervention for children or young people showing sexual behaviours that are concerning or inappropriate. This pathway is specifically for those who have not been charged with an offence.

Refugees, Asylum Seekers, and Unaccompanied Minors

We support young people who may be struggling as a result of war, displacement, trafficking, exploitation, loss, or other traumatic experiences linked to forced migration. Our work also includes support relating to experiences such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

How We Work

Every young person and family is different, so we tailor our approach to meet individual needs. We work closely with the child or young person, their family, and the professionals around them. We offer a range of trauma informed therapeutic approaches. We also link in with the wider network around a child and young person, as relationships are an important part of recovery.

We welcome enquiries from anyone involved in a child’s wellbeing—schools, social workers, health professionals, and others supporting families affected by the experiences listed above.
