What happens at a screening appointment

Elaine C Smith goes behind the scenes to show Scottish women what it’s like going for a routine breast screening appointment.

Before the test

When you arrive for your appointment, the mammographer will check your details and explain the test to you. The mammographer will always be a woman and you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions.
You should wear a loose fitting top as the mammographer will ask you to undress from the waist up but you can cover up when you’re not having the mammogram.

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t use talcum powder or spray deodorant before the test if possible.

During the test

The mammographer will X-ray one breast at a time. To do this you will be asked to stand whilst she positions your breast between two plates on the mammogram machine. The machine will then press the breast firmly between the plates for a few seconds to take two pictures of each breast. You should stay as still as possible while she takes the pictures so we can get the best possible picture of the breast tissue. A mammogram can be uncomfortable and some people may it painful but the whole process only lasts a few minutes.

After the test

We will send your results by letter within 3 weeks of your screening appointment. We will also send your results to your GP. If you don’t get a letter within 3 weeks, please contact us.
