Information about the mobile unit in Halbeath
The South East Scotland Breast Screening Service operates a number of mobile screening units in the region and is responsible for areas of Fife.
In previous screening rounds the units have moved around the region visiting many locations however as the locations are used on a three yearly basis there are often changes within areas that limit our ability to use some sites. In addition the equipment on board the units requires that specific temperature ranges be maintained 24/7 therefore Mobile units now require to be connected to electricity supplies overnight as often as possible.
The modern mobile units are different dimensions to those used previously and use wireless connectivity for image transfer, client records, and clinic appointment lists. The logistics of some car parks and the proximity to facilities for staff are also factors which limit the use of some car parks.
In making the decision of which sites to use, the first choice is always to go back to sites used in the previous round if they are suitable and meet all the criteria necessary. In Fife, the town of Kelty does not have such a site and the site in High Valleyfield also did not meet all the criteria.
In light of these factors it was decided in collaboration with Public Health colleagues in NHS Fife that all eligible women from the surrounding area could be invited to the screening unit in Halbeath. This site has suitable space, good wireless connectivity, ample parking and good facilities for staff and attendees. There is also the potential to allow some weekend clinics to be made available at this site which will occur this autumn.
It was agreed with NHS Fife Public Health colleagues, who are responsible for the governance of screening in Fife, that the uptake for the practices invited to Halbeath would be monitored. As part of the uptake evaluation process a decision will be taken as to whether a short visit to one of the more localised areas is necessary. Also throughout the period a questionnaire is available to the women who attend to provide feedback to the service about the suitability of the location.
