Our West Lothian Team

Arts Therapies Banner

In West Lothian our arts therapists work across adult inpatient mental health services, the mother and baby mental health unit, and the community perinatal mental health team providing support across the Lothians.

Mother and Baby Mental Health Unit

St Johns Hospital, Livingston

Music Therapy:
Lindsey Cullen

Music therapy is offered in the Mother and Baby Unit (ward 16) at St. John’s on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Patients can engage in group or individual work to address challenges they may be facing during the perinatal period. Music is particularly effective when facilitating opportunities for bonding and attachment between mothers and infants. The service is moulded around each individual patient’s needs, but some examples of music therapy interventions on MBU are:

  • Mother & Baby group session
  • Mother & Baby individual session
  • Mother individual session
  • Group mindfulness sessions

Referrals are not required for music therapy and existing patients can see the music therapist on request.

Adult Acute Admissions

Ward 1 (IPCU) and Ward 17 (Acute), St Johns Hospital, Livingston

Art Psychotherapy:
Vacant

Music Therapy:
Sam Lowit

Music Therapy and Art Psychotherapy are offered at St John’s Hospital adult acute admission ward (Ward 17) and Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit (IPCU) (Ward 1).

Arts Therapists offer open groups in communal areas which are available for patients, staff and carers to join. Patients are welcome to stay for a short while or for the entire session. During the session participants are encouraged to use art or music making spontaneously with the therapist to better understand themselves and to better understand relationships with others.

Arts Therapists form part of the Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) and help inform care planning.

Referrals are not required for the group or individual Art and Music Therapy sessions and they can be arranged on the ward on request.
