Probably the most frequently asked question and the main worry for patients who are coming to terms with having to have their eye removed.
The short answer is yes! Every effort is made to ensure that your artificial eye will match as closely as possible to your remaining eye. It will be individually made for you, constructed to fit your socket, and the colours will be specially chosen and hand-painted as closely as possible to match your remaining eye.
It is also common to think that “everyone will know I’ve got an artificial eye”, that somehow it will be obvious to everybody else. A little known fact is that there are approximately 70 thousand people in the UK with an artificial eye. It is more than likely that you will have met someone who is wearing a prosthetic eye, and you haven’t known. Therefore it goes to say that it is just as likely that no-one will know that you are wearing one either.
Countless patients who attend these clinics will say that “people I’ve known for years had no idea that I had an artificial eye, and it was only when I mentioned it, that they finally realised”.
There are even stories – absolutely true – of medical specialists, opticians and such like starting to examine a person’s artificial eye (with a pen-torch, for example) before being informed that it’s not a real eye!
