Part of this is to protect the function of the spinal cord and nerves to avoid any paralysis. There is a&nbsp;team dedicated to&nbsp;this specific task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This part of the web site is about them and what they do. This type of&nbsp;work is called Intra-Operative Monitoring (IOM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team is staffed by Clinical Physiologists who are specialists in assessing the effect of spinal surgery on the spinal cord.&nbsp;You can see our IOM team on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/scottishnationalspineservice\/spinal-cord-monitoring-team\/\"><strong>Spinal Cord Monitoring Team<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also look to what is happening in the rest of the United Kingdom and beyond.
