It is&nbsp;not an appropriate destination if you are looking for a second opinion on an existing condition or for minor illnesses or if you&nbsp;have a minor injury.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it is not a critical emergency please call NHS 24 on 111 to be referred to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/rightcare\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"3\">right care service<\/a>&nbsp;or consider whether your GP or community pharmacy can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-light-accent-plum-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:20px;padding-right:20px;padding-bottom:20px;padding-left:20px\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHAT IS AN&nbsp;EMERGENCY?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An emergency is a critical or life threatening situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Unconsciousness<\/li><li>Heavy blood loss<\/li><li>Suspected broken bones<\/li><li>Deep wounds, such as stab wounds<\/li><li>Suspected heart attack&nbsp;<\/li><li>Suspected stroke<\/li><li>Severe injury<\/li><li>Difficulty in breathing<\/li><li>Severe bleeding<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PLEASE THINK CAREFULLY&nbsp;BEFORE USING EMERGENCY SERVICES<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients attend the Emergency Department (ED)&nbsp;for many reasons; for example, accidents on the road, at work or at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Emergency Department also provides immediate care for patients who take unwell with a range of different acute medical and surgical conditions, for example a heart attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who use emergency services for minor problems may prevent others with emergencies from getting immediate care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you self present at ED with a condition that is not a critical emergency&nbsp;you might be redirected to a more appropriate care service.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IN A CRITICAL EMERGENCY OR INJURY CALL 999 NHS Lothian has 3 Emergency Departments (A&amp;Es) for critical emergencies.
