{"id":669,"date":"2026-08-03T11:50:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T10:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/ridu\/?page_id=669"},"modified":"2026-08-03T11:52:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T10:52:56","slug":"dried-blood-spot-testing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/ridu\/dried-blood-spot-testing\/","title":{"rendered":"Dried Blood Spot Testing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dried Blood Spot (DBS) testing<\/strong>&nbsp;is a simple, minimally invasive way to screen for infections like&nbsp;Hepatitis C,&nbsp;Hepatitis B, and&nbsp;HIV&nbsp;using just a finger-prick sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How the test works<\/strong>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A small&nbsp;<strong>pinprick<\/strong>&nbsp;is made on the finger (like a glucose test).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drops of blood are placed onto a special&nbsp;<strong>DBS card<\/strong>&nbsp;(filter paper).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The card dries and is sent to a lab for analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Test for all three BBVs at the same time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People testing positive for one blood borne virus have an elevated risk of being co-infected with other BBVs because of the common routes of transmission. Testing for a single virus may lead to missed diagnoses and false reassurance for people who believe they are being tested for all.
