However, during this recovery period it is&nbsp;<strong>important that you continue to be active<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>try to get moving again sooner rather than later.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research has shown that there are lots of benefits to getting out of bed early and returning to normal activities. Using the ERAS diary will help you&nbsp;<strong>reflect on the progress you are making<\/strong>, even on the days that are not going so well.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"71\" height=\"60\" src=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/preparingforsurgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2022\/04\/sickness2.png\" alt=\"icon of head and shoulders\" class=\"wp-image-551\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Feeling sick<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeling sick is not unusual after surgery, but there will always be&nbsp;<strong>anti-sickness medicine available<\/strong>&nbsp;(anti-emetics). You should tell the nurses or doctors looking after you if you are feeling sick.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"63\" height=\"70\" src=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/preparingforsurgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2022\/04\/tiredness.png\" alt=\"Sleep icon\" class=\"wp-image-550\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tiredness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Recovering from surgery requires a lot of energy as your body heals.&nbsp;<strong>This will make you feel more tired than normal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to get enough&nbsp;<strong>good quality sleep at night<\/strong>&nbsp;to allow you to be active during the day. You may want to consider bringing an eye mask and ear plugs to help you sleep if you will be staying in hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"55\" height=\"58\" src=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/preparingforsurgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2022\/04\/pain.png\" alt=\"sticking plaster icon\" class=\"wp-image-549\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be worried that pain will stop you from moving, but there are a range of pain relief options available to help you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although you may not be totally pain free, you&nbsp;<strong>should be able to do the mobility and breathing exercises<\/strong>. In fact, it helps make the muscles and nerves in your bowel start working again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eating and drinking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You will normally be able to&nbsp;<strong>drink water soon after your operation<\/strong>. You can drink&nbsp;<strong>as much water as you feel able<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, by the first day you will be able to start eating. Your surgeon or nurse will review your diet and give you advice each day. There is lots of choice on the hospital menu. If you have any dietary requirements that are not met by the menu then please let the staff know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may find that your appetite is reduced or that you feel sick at times. It is usually&nbsp;<strong>easier to eat little and often.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help with this there are snacks available on the ward. You can walk to the patient snack fridge to help yourself. Ask the nurses what is available on your ward and they will show you where they are. The drinks are kept in the patient snack fridges on the ward. You are welcome to help yourself. Have drinks between meals so that you don&#8217;t fill yourself up and still have an appetite for other food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please let the nurses know what you eat and drink, or even better&nbsp;<strong>keep a record in your ERAS diary.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"breathing\">Breathing exercises<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is really important that you are able to&nbsp;<strong>breathe deeply and cough<\/strong>&nbsp;after your operation. Increase the distance each time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurses, physios and support workers will all be happy to help if you feel you need support or assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enhanced recovery walkways<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Western General Hospital has an ERAS walkway with distance markers. Ask your nurse or physio to show you where this is. You might like to use the corridor to measure your progress,&nbsp;<strong>aiming to walk slightly further each day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mobility exercises<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are able, try these mobility exercises 5 times per day:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leg extension<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Raise one leg straight out in front and pull up your toes to tighten your thigh muscles.
