{"id":498,"date":"2022-12-07T11:14:21","date_gmt":"2022-12-07T11:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/parkinsonsservices\/information-for-gps-and-professionals\/"},"modified":"2022-12-07T16:34:08","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T16:34:08","slug":"information-for-gps-and-professionals","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/parkinsonsservices\/information-for-gps-and-professionals\/","title":{"rendered":"Information for GPs and Professionals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Referral<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please see <strong>RefHelp<\/strong> for referral guidance for people with Parkinson&#8217;s<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients with suspected&nbsp;<strong>Parkinson\u2019s Disease or related movement disorders<\/strong>&nbsp;are assessed and managed by&nbsp;<strong>Neurology or Medicine of the Elderly&nbsp;<\/strong>consultants depending upon age and frailty<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For any patients, particularly those aged&nbsp;<strong>under 65 years&nbsp;\/ biologically young&nbsp;or those with&nbsp;atypical movement disorders<\/strong>, refer to&nbsp;Neurology&nbsp;via SCI Gateway<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For patients&nbsp;<strong>aged over 65 years,<\/strong>&nbsp;there are specialist Parkinson\u2019s clinics in each area of Lothian (Refer via Sci Gateway to your local Medicine of the Elderly service)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The<strong>&nbsp;Neurology Movement Disorders Clinic<\/strong>&nbsp;is based at the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and run by Drs Richard Davenport and David Breen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>Medicine of the Older Adult Parkinson&#8217;s Clinics&nbsp;<\/strong>are as follows:<br>WGH (North West Edinburgh): Dr Conor Maguire \/ Dr Elizabeth Keane<br>Leith CTC (North East Edinburgh): Dr Gordon Duncan<br>Liberton (South Edinburgh &amp; Parkinson\u2019s disease in adults<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/ParkinsonsServices\/Documents\/Management%20of%20patients%20with%20Parkinson%27s%20disease%20who%20are%20nil%20by%20mouth%20or%20with%20a%20compromised%20swallow.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Management of patients with Parkinson&#8217;s disease who are nil by mouth or with a compromised swallow<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anticipatory Care Planning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some very useful resources created locally that can guide professionals on anticipatory care planning. &nbsp;This covers help with identifying patients where care planning might be relevant, and ways to improve discussions and communication around these issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spict.org.uk\/the-spict\/spict-4all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SPICT-4ALL<\/a>&nbsp;is a tool to identify patients who may benefit from anticipatory care planning, supportive, or palliative care. &nbsp;It uses plain language and avoids medical jargon for use with patients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ec4h.org.uk\/resources\/acp-in-care-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Effective Communication for Healthcare<\/a>run workshops to help professionals improve their communications around deteriorating patients. &nbsp;They have developed the tool developed by Dr Andrew MacKay at St Triduana&#8217;s GP Practice to assist with anticipatory care planning in care homes. &nbsp;This is based around the three questions: &#8220;How would you like to be treated if &#8230;&#8221;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;&#8230;you suddenly collapsed?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;&#8230;you had an infection that was not responding to antibiotics?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;&#8230;you were no longer able to eat and drink due to an illness?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Referral Email:&nbsp;Parkinsons.nursespec@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk RefHelp links Parkinsons (MoE) &ndash;
