{"id":3,"date":"2021-04-08T14:31:10","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T13:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/palliativecare\/?page_id=3"},"modified":"2023-01-18T13:02:12","modified_gmt":"2023-01-18T13:02:12","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/palliativecare\/","title":{"rendered":"Palliative Care"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is palliative care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with any life-limiting illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and careful assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial or spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Palliative care:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>integrates the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>offers a support system to help the family cope during the patient&#8217;s illness and in their own bereavement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>uses a team approach to address the needs of patients and their families<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>affirms life and regards dying as a normal process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>intends neither to hasten or postpone death<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>is relevant all through the course of an illness, in combination with many other treatments that are intended to prolong life, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, medication or renal replacement therapy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who provides palliative care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Palliative care is part of the care delivered by a wide range of health and social care professionals working in the community, in care homes and in hospitals.
