{"id":2503,"date":"2025-07-24T12:14:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T11:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/nursingandmidwifery\/?page_id=2503"},"modified":"2026-01-07T16:47:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T16:47:19","slug":"lothian-experiential-leadership-academy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/nursingandmidwifery\/lothian-experiential-leadership-academy\/","title":{"rendered":"Experiential Learning &amp; Leadership Academy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">One experience at a time: your gateway to development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Experiential Learning &amp; Leadership Academy is open to <strong>all registered and non-registered nurses and midwives.   <\/strong>The aim of the Academy is to offer <strong>experiential learning<\/strong> opportunities across four levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/nursingandmidwifery\/discovering-level\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2511\"><strong>Level 1 Discovering<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 shadowing opportunities for a few hours or 1 day <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/nursingandmidwifery\/deciding-level\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2540\">Level 2 Deciding<\/a> <\/strong>\u2013<strong> <\/strong>shadowing and participating opportunities to help understand other roles and services for 1-2 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level 3 Developing<\/strong> \u2013 leading on specific projects across NHS Lothian.&nbsp; This could be an extended period of learning for the lifetime of the project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level 4 Directing<\/strong> \u2013 leading on a systems wide programme of work, sponsored by an NHS Lothian Executive.&nbsp; This will involve chairing meetings and reporting to the Board.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/nursingandmidwifery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/123\/2025\/11\/ELLA-Graphic.jpg\" alt=\"ELLA Graphic\" class=\"wp-image-2776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/nursingandmidwifery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/123\/2025\/11\/ELLA-Graphic.jpg 602w, https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/nursingandmidwifery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/123\/2025\/11\/ELLA-Graphic-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>So far we have been working on the <strong>Discovering<\/strong> and <strong>Deciding<\/strong> levels and will come to the Developing and Directing levels in the future. ELLA is open to registered and non-registered nursing and midwifery staff and those that come under the &#8216;umbrella&#8217; of nursing and midwifery, such as operating department assistants\/practitioners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aims<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aims of the Experiential Learning &amp; Leadership Academy are to provide a structured learning opportunities to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improve  understanding of other roles and services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide opportunities to consider a career move<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support succession and career planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribute to staff retention <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create opportunities for networking, collaborative working and building relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The experiential learning experiences may include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Organisational Understanding: attending organisational meetings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clinical Shadowing: other clinical services or patient pathways<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professional Practice: taking part in professional activities <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each level of award has <strong>criteria for application<\/strong>, <strong>application process<\/strong> and process for issue of an <strong>ELLA award certificate<\/strong>.
