Before making up a formula feed you must ensure that your equipment is correctly washed and sterilised so that you are reducing the risk of your baby getting an infection. We cannot avoid germs; they live in our bodies, on our skin and on the surfaces around us e.g beds, worktops, plates etc. Some of these germs are harmful, others less so but all babies are vulnerable to them and can become sick very quickly if they pick up a harmful germ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before preparing your baby’s feed, make sure you have a clean working surface by wiping the surface with a disinfectant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next step is to wash your hands as you were shown when your baby was in the neonatal unit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fill the kettle with fresh tap water from the tap and let it boil. Do not use mineral water or artificially softened water. Let the water cool for no more than 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remove the bottle from the sterilising unit and place on the counter. Leave the cap, collar and cap in the steriliser or place on the cold water tank float. (If some bottles are not being used immediately, they should be fully assembled with the teat and bottle cap in place).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always put the water in the bottle first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fill the bottle up to the number of millilitres or ounces that you want. This should be done at eye level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then add the number of scoops of powder as recommended. Use the scoop provided with the tin \u2013 sizes may differ. Level each scoop with a knife or the leveller provided in the container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Place the teat collar and cap on the bottle.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n

  • Shake the bottle until the powder is dissolved.<\/span><\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n

  • You can cool the<\/span> formula to the required temperature in a jug of cold water.<\/span><\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n

  • To test the temperature of the milk, put a few drops on the inside of your arm,\u00a0it<\/span> should feel just warm.<\/span><\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n
