{"id":636,"date":"2025-05-06T09:14:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T08:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/neonatalunit\/?page_id=636"},"modified":"2025-05-06T09:16:35","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T08:16:35","slug":"simpsons","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/neonatalunit\/simpsons\/","title":{"rendered":"Simpsons"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-fd445384\">\n\n<p>NHS Lothian Neonatal units consist of 2 sites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our largest is at the Simpson Centre based within the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) and is a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and admits around 850 infants per year.&nbsp; We are a busy&nbsp;unit with a maximum capacity of 39 neonatal cots split between<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>9 Intensive Care Cots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>8 High Dependency Cots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>22 Special Care Cots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-6360\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Can I claim for food and travel?<\/h2><div id=\"ac-6360\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Being a parent or guardian on the unit you are able to claim for travel and food expenses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Young patients family fund enables families to claim up to \u00a38.50 per day. Application forms can be found at main reception with ward clerks or available from your baby\u2019s nurse at bedside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forms must be completed and signed by staff nurse on NNU and then taken to hospital cashiers office in main mall of hospital for processing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-6361\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Can parents stay over?<\/h2><div id=\"ac-6361\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accommodation available on the NNU and bedrooms close by unit within the hospital.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>X2 ensuite rooms on unit available for parents\/relatives with parent pass. Allocation of this from nurse at bedside or team leader.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>X2 single bedrooms off unit. Allocation of this from nurse at bedside or team leader<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>X2 double bedrooms off unit. Allocation of this from nurse at bedside or team leader.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>X4 bed T\/C unit for parents rooming in for discharge preparation or if they are breastfeeding baby during admission and need to be close by. These are single bed bays but recliner lounge chairs at bedside so 2<sup>nd<\/sup> parent or relative with 2<sup>nd<\/sup> parent pass can stay as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-6362\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Parent Support Group<\/h2><div id=\"ac-6362\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the neonatal unit we have the Family Wellbeing Team. This team is made up of 3 clinical psychologists who are available throughout the week Mon-Fri. They are available as part of your baby\u2019s care at the Simpson neonatal unit. The team offer confidential wellbeing appointments, support for emotional health and any parent-infant relationship issues related to experiences of maternity and neonatal care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you would like to speak with the Family Wellbeing Team they can be contacted via your baby\u2019s nurse or medical team. Or contacted directly at mnpi.mail.nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The spiritual care team offer confidential support for families and can be contacted via the nurse at your baby\u2019s bedside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bliss charity \u2013 we have signposting on our Bliss notice board in the NNU to the many support resources available from Bliss for parents and families of premature or sick babies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We also have a Bliss volunteer available on the unit every Wednesday for any further support or advice about having a baby on the neonatal unit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Aberlour group. This is a charity who offers emotional support for families with babies in the NNU. They are based in the unit weekly to provide valuable support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NCT (national childbirth trust)&nbsp; breastfeeding buddies \u2013 these volunteers are based on the unit weekly offering breastfeeding support and advice to mums.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the unit we offer parent craft sessions which are carried out by nursing staff and AHPs to provide information and support about different topics surrounding having a baby in the neonatal unit and transitioning to home &#8211; (this is a more formal teaching group but can offer further support for families).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other charity and support group information can be found around the NNU and on our social media pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dads Rock advertised on unit as a good resources for new dads. This is an Edinburgh based charity which has support groups and other resources such as a WhatsApp group for providing help and support for dads in NNU &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dadsrock.org.uk\/\">Dads Rock<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-6363\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Siblings Support<\/h2><div id=\"ac-6363\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The family wellbeing team can also offer support to siblings as needed as well as parents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Based at the RHCYP there is \u201cThe Hub\u201d. Here, siblings can have access to their play area and play activities which vary daily. The hub also have a team of youth workers and family support services available for siblings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-6364\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Faith Leaders<\/h2><div id=\"ac-6364\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spiritual Care team \/ Chaplaincy service in the RIE available Mon-Fri 9-5 based at Sanctuary on ground floor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chaplains work on-call as well and can be contacted out of hours so this service is available 24\/7.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To contact this service please speak to nurse at bedside or the Diana Children\u2019s Nurse within the NNU.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you wish to bring your own faith leader this can be arranged, please speak with nurse looking after your baby or team leader.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We can also arrange a blessing or naming ceremony etc if you wish. Please arrange this with nurse looking after your baby.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-6365\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Nearby places for &#8220;time out&#8221;<\/h2><div id=\"ac-6365\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We have a family seating room which is still on the unit but away from the noise of the main area. This has dimmed light and sofas for a quieter space to relax.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sanctuary is available for quiet space to sit if a family member is needing some \u201ctime out\u201d. This is found in the south corridor of the ground floor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is also a \u201cwellbeing walk\u201d which is sign posted and follows a range of different paths around the grounds of the hospital. Around these paths and the green areas of the grounds there are also lots of benches and picnic benches to sit outside if need quiet time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-6366\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">WiFi and Mobile Phones<\/h2><div id=\"ac-6366\" class=\"c-accordion__content\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-63201269\">\n\n<p><strong>WiFi: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is WIFI available in the hospital. This is just listed as NHS-Freewifi when searched on phone \/ electronic device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No charges but asks you to create login when first try to use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-849aa17a\">\n\n<p><strong>Mobile Phones: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mobile phones are allowed on the unit but we ask that they are used in the corridor or family room and not at the cot side and are kept on silent mode.
