Your baby’s cares on the neonatal unit
When your baby is due to have their nappy changed you may hear staff refer to this as carrying out your baby’s “cares”. The nurse will talk you through this and provide as much support as you need, but once you are feeling comfortable we are more than happy for you to continue leading in your baby’s cares when they are needed.
Some things to remember when carrying out your baby’s cares are:
- Prepare everything beforehand. You will need cotton wool, water pot, nappy and any creams you plan to apply.
- Wash your hands.
- Speak to your baby but keep it soft and gentle, they may get startled by a sudden change and handling. Try keep bright lights and noise to a minimum.
- Avoid lifting your baby by the legs. Instead, hold their feet sole to sole and gently flex their legs towards their body. Some babies may also require side lying nappy change. Please speak to the nurse at the cotside about this.
