Skin to skin contact is one of the ways to help you comfort your baby, make them feel safe and secure, and helps start breastfeeding and relationship building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After your baby is born, where possible,&nbsp;your baby&nbsp;will be&nbsp;dried and placed onto&nbsp;your chest to be held in skin to skin contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0vzW9qPz3So\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNICEF video on Skin to Skin Contact for more information<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/maternity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/12\/120-Magical-hour-Poster-02-16.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/maternity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/12\/120-Magical-hour-Poster-02-16.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First Magical\u00a0Hour poster<\/a>\u00a0to find out about how the first few hours after your baby is born and breastfeeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cord clamping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your baby is born, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut.&nbsp;&nbsp;This will not cause pain to you or your baby.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vitamin K<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All babies normally receive a vitamin K injection shortly after birth to remove the small risk that they may start bleeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pulse Oximetry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All babies born in NHS Lothian will have a routine pulse oximetry test within the first 24 hours after birth.
