{"id":506,"date":"2023-01-18T14:53:17","date_gmt":"2023-01-18T14:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/communication-guide\/"},"modified":"2023-01-19T10:45:29","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T10:45:29","slug":"communication-guide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/communication-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Communication Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ways to help people with communication needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Always say the person&#8217;s name and wait for the person to look at you before speaking. &nbsp;This will get the person&#8217;s attention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speak in simple, short sentences. &nbsp;Try to speak slowly and clearly and do not shout. &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk directly to the person. &nbsp;If you feel he\/she is not understanding involve the carer, by saying to the person. &nbsp;For example, &#8220;I&#8217;m just going to ask James some questions&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use everyday words and avoid abbreviations. &nbsp;For example say &#8216;hospital&#8217; and not &#8216;RIE&#8217;. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask yes\/no questions. &nbsp;For example, &#8220;Do you live in Edinburgh&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try not to use sentences with a negative, let the person know what to do rather than what not to do. &nbsp;For example don&#8217;t say &#8220;Claire, don&#8217;t run&#8221;, say &#8220;Claire, walk&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Point to objects and use deliberate gestures to help the person understand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use other visual aids available: leaflets, photos, written word to help the person understand. &nbsp;It is good to have a piece of paper and pen handy to draw or write things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask the person if he\/she have understood what you have said. &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write down, summarise any important points you want the person to remember\/understand. &nbsp;He\/she may not be able to read, however can show it to someone who can help them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Explain what is going to happen to help reassure and avoid anxiety. &nbsp;Explain it in the order that things are going to happen. &nbsp;For example, &#8220;Claire, we&#8217;re going to speak to the doctor and then have lunch&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listen and look out for facial expressions, body language, pointing etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check that you have understood what the person has said to you by summarising it. &nbsp;For example &#8220;So Claire, what I&#8217;ve heard is &nbsp;&#8230;. is this right?&#8221;. &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide time and opportunities for questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ways to help people with communication needs:<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":8,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"page-templates\/widewidth.php","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"class_list":["post-506","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"rttpg_featured_image_url":null,"rttpg_author":{"display_name":"NHS Lothian","author_link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/author\/nhs-lothian\/"},"rttpg_comment":0,"rttpg_category":false,"rttpg_excerpt":"Ways to help people with communication needs:","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/506","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=506"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/506\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":538,"href":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/506\/revisions\/538"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=506"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/learningdisabilities\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=506"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
