{"id":311,"date":"2025-11-03T09:16:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T09:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/hcprofessionsresearch\/post-doctoral-gateway\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T09:28:43","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T09:28:43","slug":"post-doctoral-gateway","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/hcprofessionsresearch\/post-doctoral-gateway\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-doctoral Bridging Gateway Award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>APPLICATIONS FOR COHORT 5 OF THE GATEWAY AWARDS ARE NOW OPEN!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a funded opportunity for NMAHPPS professionals who completed their doctoral studies in the previous 3 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Post-doctoral Bridging Gateway Award will provide funded time and mentorship and will include opportunities for networking and support to continue academic development.&nbsp; The funding in this award is for 26 days over a 12 month period, which can be taken flexibly, and will be paid to the service for backfill for the post holder.&nbsp; This time allocation is&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;intended to be used to carry out a new research study or continue an existing one.&nbsp;There is no additional funding for conference attendance, training, travel or open access publication fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gateway Award will be directed at strengthening future career opportunities as a post-doctoral researcher that may include preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications, wider dissemination activities, networking and application for externally funded, competitive post-doctoral fellowships (examples include NRS Career Researcher Fellowships, CSO Post-doctoral Fellowships).&nbsp; Candidates will be encouraged to join established research teams as a co-applicant on funded studies and, where appropriate, to contribute to funding applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, candidates may apply for external grant awards as Chief Investigator (e.g. for feasibility\/pilot studies).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Candidates will be encouraged to apply for an Academic Home (within the NHS Lothian <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/hcprofessionsresearch\/clinical-and-academic-homes\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/hcprofessionsresearch\/clinical-and-academic-homes\/\">Clinical and Academic Home Framework<\/a>) with the host institution, if this is not already in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications should be submitted by <strong><strong>16th January 202<\/strong>6<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/hcprofessionsresearch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2025\/10\/Post-Doctoral-Gateway-Funding-Application-Form-2026.docx\">Application form<\/a> Post-doctoral Bridging Gateway Award &#8211; submit to <strong><a href=\"mailto:Loth.GatewayAwards@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk\">Loth.GatewayAwards@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please also complete and return an <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/hcprofessionsresearch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2025\/10\/Equal-Opportunities-Form.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Equal Opportunities Form<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Full <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/hcprofessionsresearch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2025\/10\/Terms-and-Conditions-Post-doctoral-Bridging-Gateway-Awards-v1.2-29.04.24.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Terms and Conditions<\/a> Post-doctoral Bridging Gateway Award<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aims<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To provide mentorship to NMAHPPS professionals who have completed doctoral studies within the previous 3 years to progress their next steps of a post-doctoral clinical academic career, including application for post-doctoral fellowships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To enable professional and academic networking to enhance collaborative activities directed at research grant applications and\/or opportunities to become a co-investigator on funded programmes of research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To provide support to implement a publication plan related to the recent doctoral studies.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Target Group<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NMAHPPS professionals who have completed doctoral studies within the previous 3 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants would be expected to have a clear intention to pursue a clinical academic career that includes employment in the NHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criteria for Application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a substantive post employed by NHS Lothian<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Successful completion of doctoral studies (PhD, PhD by publication, taught doctorate) in the past 3 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clear idea of ongoing programme of research that demonstrates link to practice priorities and extension of development of methodological expertise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outline publication plan from doctoral research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where relevant, evidence of discussion with potential supervisor in host institution with confirmation that would be supported for post-doctoral fellowship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criteria for Award<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support from immediate line manager to be released for study leave<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clarification from candidate and line manager that area of research interest is relevant to NHS Lothian priorities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Career planning that demonstrates ambition for research leadership and clinical academic role<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Realistic publication plan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstration of clear intention to apply for post-doctoral fellowship as part of career pathway regardless of outcome of application for this award<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expected Outcomes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Evidence that planned publications have been submitted for peer review<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence of networking and dissemination activities that will further career opportunities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where seeking post-doctoral fellowship funding, evidence that application has been submitted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next Steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Candidates will continue to be supported by their professional research lead if they remain in employment in NHS Lothian.&nbsp; This will include membership of the NMAHPPS Doctoral Network and support to continue in an Academic Home.&nbsp; Where relevant and there is evidence of service need there may be engagement with service and professional leads regarding potential clinical academic opportunities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the post-doctoral fellowship application is successful there will be ongoing engagement and support from the professional research lead.&nbsp; If this is a full-time commitment, there should be ongoing engagement with the candidate to identify the most appropriate ways to maintain contact with NHS Lothian during the period of the fellowship.&nbsp; This could include the establishment of a formal \u2018Clinical Home\u2019 with a relevant service that would confer an honorary contract and explicit mutually-agreed objectives for that ongoing involvement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the post-doctoral fellowship application is unsuccessful candidates will be invited to continue to engage with their appropriate professional lead and mentor for other opportunities.&nbsp;
