In 2015 legislation was passed to allow the supply of this Prescription Only Medicine (POM), without the need for a prescription or Patient Group Direction. The legislation is specific to services which provide drug treatment i.e. provide Opioid Substitute Treatment (OST) or Injecting Equipment Provision (IEP).

This framework relates only to the supply of naloxone hydrochloride injection (Prenoxad) or intransal naloxone (Nyxoid) for lay administration and includes actions which must be followed. You must be authorised by name and have undertaken local naloxone supply competency framework training, under the current version of this framework to be able to issue supplies of Naloxone. To support your learning, please complete the short Learn Pro module on Take Home Naloxone for NHS staff or alternatively, the Scottish Drugs Forum Overdose Prevention, Intervention and Naloxone elearning module.

Download: NHS Lothian Take Home Naloxone Supply Competency Framework

NHS Lothian Take Home Naloxone Supply Record

Click here to access TURAS for elearning module Naloxone and Overdose awareness

Click here for SDF E-Learning Overdose Prevention, Intervention and Naloxone

Authorisation to supply using this framework only allows supplies to be made under the framework as specified; supplies issued on prescription or by patient group directive (PGD) must be made by the appropriately trained person.

To support your work supplying naloxone, the approved NHS Lothian Patient Information Leaflet is also available here for download, printed copies are also available from Spittal Street Centre.

The supply record form should be used to record each supply for statistical purposes.
