We understand that urodynamic testing may feel unfamiliar or embarrassing, but our experienced staff are trained to carry out these tests sensitively, respectfully, and professionally, ensuring your comfort and dignity throughout

What We Do

Urodynamics involves a series of diagnostic tests that help us understand how your bladder and urethra are working.

These tests may be used to assess:

Urinary incontinence

Difficulty emptying the bladder

Urinary urgency or frequency

Symptoms before or after treatment or surgery

The results help your healthcare team make an accurate diagnosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment for you. Tests are usually carried out as outpatient procedures, and staff will explain each step before and during your appointment.

Referral Process

Referrals to the Urodynamics Service are made by a Consultant or Urogynaecology Clinical Nurse Specialist only.

Patients are informed when they have been placed on the waiting list for urodynamic testing. At that point, they are given:

The reason for the referral

A brief explanation of what the test involves

An indication of the current waiting time

Once an appointment is scheduled, patients receive a detailed information leaflet explaining how to prepare for the test. A reminder call is made two weeks before the appointment to ensure all preparation instructions have been followed.

Contact Information

A general contact number is not routinely provided for urodynamics queries.
If patients have questions before their appointment, they should contact the secretary of the Consultant or Clinical Nurse Specialist who placed them on the waiting list.

Welcome to the Urodynamics Service at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Western General Hospital.
