Meet the Gynaecological Oncology Team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The Gynaecological Oncology Team in NHS Lothian provides specialist care for women with cancers of the ovary, uterus (womb), cervix, vulva, vagina, and related conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team (MDT) of highly trained specialists who work closely together to ensure that every patient receives personalised, evidence-based treatment and support.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
Our team is structured into Surgical, Clinical and Medical Oncology services, working alongside specialist nurses, allied health professionals, pathologists, radiologists, and research teams. In addition, we will often work with other specialties to deliver the individualised care you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Surgical Oncology Team<\/strong><\/h2>

The Surgical Oncology Team specialises in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of gynaecological cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are responsible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
Performing diagnostic procedures (including biopsies and minimally invasive surgery)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Delivering complex cancer surgery, including laparoscopic, robotic, and open procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Undertaking cytoreductive (removal of cancer) surgery where appropriate<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Assessing operability and surgical risk in partnership with the wider MDT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Surgery is often a key part of treatment and is carefully planned to balance cancer control with recovery, quality of life, and individual patient goals.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
Clinical Oncology Team<\/strong><\/h2>

The Clinical Oncology Team focuses on the use of radiotherapy, which is sometimes combined with chemotherapry or immunotherapy to treat gynaecological cancer care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their role includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
Assess patients who may benefit from radiotherapy (with or without chemotherapy and\/or immunotherapy)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Plan and deliver highly targeted radiation treatments<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Work closely with surgeons and medical oncologists to coordinate combined treatment pathways<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Support patients through treatment, managing side effects and recovery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

Medical Oncology Team<\/strong><\/h2>

The Medical Oncology Team specialises in systemic anti-cancer treatments, which treat cancer cells throughout the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their role includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delivering chemotherapy and targeted therapies<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Tailoring treatment based on cancer type, stage, and molecular characteristics<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Monitoring response to treatment and managing side effects<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Supporting patients through treatment decisions and long-term follow-up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
