Your Line Manager/Practice Manager will discuss this with you.

Other training courses

As well as mandatory training General Practice staff will participate in learning within the Practice, that is specific to your own role. Every member of staff is expected to work within the limits of their own competency and job description and should attend specific training/development as required for your own job description. Some training will be delivered by your Practice Manager or Line Manager, and some will be delivered by experts within their field or by other departments in NHS Lothian such as e-Health systems training, or other Boards within Scotland such as Health Improvement Scotland. If you are unsure how to do a task or use a piece of equipment you must ask for training or peer support.

All training must be discussed with your line manager/Practice Manager as there is a requirement to ensure that the Practice has sufficient colleagues to cover for your absence from your role.

Most training will be delivered face to face, in Person or over Microsoft Teams or will be delivered by your manager on a 1:1 basis.

General Practice Training Programme

There is a General Practice Training Programme that runs from September to June every year and there are a mixture of courses that admin staff can attend. This is carefully put together, to ensure that the busiest times within the Practice are avoided i.e., Summer Holidays, NHS Lothian Public Holidays, School holidays and the Christmas period. The General Practice Training Manager sends the training content to your Practice Manager on a weekly basis.

NHS Lothian will carry out its educational functions in a way that is inclusive to all learners. We strive to minimise any barriers to learning. If you have any educational access needs, please contact the General Practice Training Manager in advance of any training and we will make every effort to assist you to have a good learning experience.

Fully completed and signed application forms must be submitted to the General Practice Training Inbox by your Practice Manager or Budget holder. loth.gptrainingapps@nhs.scot

If you feel that there are any gaps in this training programme, please drop me an email with your suggestions. We are always looking to enhance the programme and keep in relevant!

Course delivery

Our training Programme is being delivered as a mixture of MS Teams and in-Person. Please check each flyer for this specific information.

For training that is delivered on MS Teams platform

To ensure that you can fully participate in the learning experience and get the best out of the learning, you are required to use an NHS Lothian PC that is situated in a quiet area of the Practice. You are required to access a PC that has a working camera. You will also need noise cancelling headphones to minimise background noise (in- ear headphones don’t do this very well!).

Due to Data Protection issues learning provided by external delivery partners must be undertaken using and NHS Lothian e-mail address. Participants are asked to log into the course 5-10 minutes before the course is due to start. We also expect participants to keep their cameras on for the duration of the training.

GP TRAINING APPLICATION FORM_2026_V2

*NOTE TO GP TRAINING APPLICANTS- EITHER NURSING OR ADMINISTRATIVE

Essential Information on the application form

When sending in an application form, please include your staff’s new and updated email address ie .nhs.scot

Attending a course without booking

Due to the numbers of staff turning up to a course without following the booking process, there will now be a £25 administration charge for each instance.

Staff Changing Practice/Workplaces

Once the GP Training application is accepted and a place confirmed, and you have already changed practice – you are required to discuss the course and leave to attend the course, with your new Practice Manager.
