This means your staff will frequently be caring for people with a sensory impairment and it is therefore important they have training and knowledge on related issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-41320\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Evidence &#8211; Statistics<\/h2><div id=\"ac-41320\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-accent-green-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hearing Loss<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li>One in six people has a hearing loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>75% of people living in care homes have a hearing loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Up to 40% of people with learning disabilities are estimated to have hearing loss, which is often undiagnosed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are an estimated 550 profoundly Deaf BSL users in Lothian. Many Deaf people have limited English literacy, and BSL\/English interpretation should be arranged to enable full communication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-accent-green-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sight loss<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-list\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">\n<li>One in five people aged over 75 have significant sight loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Half of the over 90s have a significant sight loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People with learning disabilities are ten times more likely to have sight loss, which can be undiagnosed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-accent-green-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dual sensory impairment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-list\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">\n<li>One in 20 people in Scotland are living with both hearing and sight loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>88% of people with dual sensory loss are aged over 70<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-accent-grey-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sensory Impairment eLearning for Care Home Staff<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">As part of the implementation of the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/see-hear\/pages\/1\/\" target=\"_blank\">See Hear strategy<\/a>&nbsp;in Edinburgh, and the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburgh.gov.uk\/bslplan\" target=\"_blank\">BSL Plan for the City of Edinburgh Council\/Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership<\/a>, we are promoting four e-Learning modules to raise staff awareness of how to improve their care for people with hearing and\/or sight loss:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\" class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-list\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">\n<li>Deaf awareness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sight loss awareness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deafblind awareness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BSL awareness<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">The four modules are available on Turas Learn, NHS Education for Scotland&#8217;s learning platform for health and social care staff.   Anyone can register for these modules by going to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/learn.nes.nhs.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\">Turas website<\/a> and  searching for &#8220;deaf&#8221; &#8220;sight&#8221; &#8220;deafblind&#8221; and \u201cBSL\u201d. City of Edinburgh Council staff can access these on myLearningHub if they prefer, and the modules are also on NHS Lothian LearnPro.<br><br>Please note, some staff may already have completed all or some of the modules, as they have been required pre-course learning in previous See Hear courses such as &#8220;Sensory Champion (2 day)&#8221; and &#8220;Sight Loss and Deaf Awareness&#8221; (1 day).<br><br>Public Health Scotland\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/learning.publichealthscotland.scot\/course\/view.php?id=573\" target=\"_blank\">Making Communication Even Better Learning Hub<\/a> is full of excellent resources to improve communication with people with communication support needs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-accent-grey-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bespoke Training<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">Audiology can provide face to face training on hearing aid use and maintenance to care home staff.
