{"id":535,"date":"2025-11-11T15:13:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T15:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/carehomes\/services\/services-physical-activity\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T15:23:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T15:23:21","slug":"services-physical-activity","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/carehomes\/services-physical-activity\/","title":{"rendered":"Physical Activity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-accent-grey-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">Physical activity is important for everyone, including people who live care homes.&nbsp; We are all recommended to get <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/carehomes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/03\/3-physical-activity-for-adults-and-older-adults.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">150 minutes of activity per week<\/a>, and for older adults this should include twice weekly strength and balance exercises.&nbsp; For people who live in care homes, there can be benefits, but also challenges to achieving this target.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-accent-green-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/healthy-living\/keeping-active\/benefits-of-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\">benefits<\/a> are the same as all older adults, including reducing falls, improving mood and well-being, and reducing the likelihood of many long term conditions.&nbsp; However it can also help with maintaining independence around and out with the home, and reducing care needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">The challenges may include things like mobility or the need for assistance or supervision, equipment or technology.&nbsp; Things like dementia or difficulties with hearing, vision, balance, pain or movement do not need to stop people being active.&nbsp; These are all things that care homes and the services that support them can help with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">As well as everyday activities, like washing, dressing, and getting around, it helps if physical activity is something the person enjoys.&nbsp; If a person enjoys walking, dancing, gardening, exercise classes or bowling for example, there are often ways the care home can help the person to take part.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/healthy-living\/preventing-falls\/keeping-well\/strength-and-balance-exercises\" target=\"_blank\">NHS approved exercise programmes<\/a> suitable for different ability levels can be accessed online and where needed care home staff can provide supervision to do them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Care Inspectorate promotes meaningful activity for residents. A guide on resources can be found here, on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.careinspectorate.com\/index.php\/guidance\/9-professional\/2615-care-about-physical-activity\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.careinspectorate.com\/index.php\/guidance\/9-professional\/2615-care-about-physical-activity\">Care About Physical Activity (CAPA)<\/a> page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indoor activities can be great, but if the weather and temperature is okay, there can be many health and social benefits to going outdoors and enjoying nature.&nbsp; Care homes can help with people going outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/\">Walking Scotland<\/a> is a walking and wheeling charity which runs <a href=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/get-involved\/join-a-health-walk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/get-involved\/join-a-health-walk\/\">local Health Walks<\/a>, which can provide residents with a range of benefits, from improved physical health and mood to better connections with other people and the local area. <a href=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/get-involved\/join-a-health-walk\/search-results\/?q=edinburgh\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/get-involved\/join-a-health-walk\/search-results\/?q=edinburgh\">Find out how to join a Health Walk in Edinburgh on Walking Scotland&#8217;s page<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walking Scotland also has several <a href=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/resource\/care-about-walking-resources\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/resource\/care-about-walking-resources\/\">Care About Walking resources<\/a> which can be used to improve the health and wellbeing of care home residents, patients and clients:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-5350\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Walking Scotland also has a number of freely available digital resources for care homes:<\/h2><div id=\"ac-5350\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/resource\/care-about-walking-resources\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/resource\/care-about-walking-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Care About Walking information booklet, activity record sheets and posters<\/a> can be downloaded<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/resource\/walking-with-strength-and-balance-toolkit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strength and balance exercise toolkit<\/a>, designed for all adults, can be downloaded, and if suitable can be done in a care home, with supervision if needed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/showcase\/8008708\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">animated videos of strength and balance exercises<\/a> that can be done with supervision if needed in the care home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People living in care homes are welcome on Health Walks.&nbsp; Many are dementia-friendly and some include strength and balance exercises.&nbsp; You can find a local one on the <a href=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/get-involved\/join-a-health-walk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Find a Health Walk map<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residents may benefit from <a href=\"https:\/\/walkingscotland.org.uk\/resource\/walking-in-nature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">being in nature<\/a>, which is shown to boost mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Nature is accessible to all, and can mean anything from your garden, to a local park or venturing out to a woodland, beach or trail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reduced Mobility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For residents with reduced mobility, there are organisations that can support them in accessing the outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingwithoutage.scot\/in-your-area\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cyclingwithoutage.scot\/in-your-area\/\">Cycling Without Age<\/a> is a charity that offers free bike rides on trishaws and wheelchair bikes for residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachwheelchairs.org\/\">Beach Wheelchairs<\/a> is a charity with wheelchairs and equipment on site at Portobello and North Berwick beaches to allow people with reduced mobility to access the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Walking Aids<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents in Edinburgh who may need a review of a walking aid may use NHS Lothian&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/carehomes\/services-physio-at-home\/\">Physio@Home service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, a walking aid assessment can be made through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smart.scot.nhs.uk\/service\/disabled-living-centre\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.smart.scot.nhs.uk\/service\/disabled-living-centre\/\">Disabled Living Centre<\/a> at the SMART Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-accent-green-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">People that live in care homes are welcome to be referred to local strength and balance classes in many areas, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghleisure.co.uk\/activities\/balanced-life\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghleisure.co.uk\/activities\/balanced-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Balanced Life in Edinburgh<\/a>.&nbsp; These classes are evidence-based to reduce falls.&nbsp; The referral would be by a healthcare professional, such as a physiotherapist, GP,  nurse or occupational therapist and the person may need to be accompanied to the classes in local leisure centres.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">Local leisure and community centres and sports clubs often have a variety of classes or sessions suitable for people that live in care homes that can be attended without a referral.&nbsp; They generally have accessible services, such as pools with hoists or steps, disabled parking, and accessible toilet and changing facilities.
