The cardiac rehabilitation team can provide you with the knowledge and support you may need to achieve this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are differences between exercise and activity and it is important to consider this when planning your routine \u2013 in simple terms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Exercise<\/strong>&nbsp;can be defined as something that makes your heart beat faster. To exercise your heart, you have to maintain a raised heart rate for a minimum of 10 minutes at a time, e.g. walking at a moderate pace.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Activity&nbsp;<\/strong>is more like walking in the supermarket while you do your shopping, or doing your housework. It is often more stop\/start in nature and can be described as functional activity. This kind of activity is beneficial as it helps to keep you moving throughout the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/why-sitting-too-much-is-bad-for-us\" target=\"_blank\">NHS information page<\/a>&nbsp;highlight the importance of combining both activity and exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"23 and 1\/2 hours: What is the single best thing we can do for our health?\" width=\"1520\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aUaInS6HIGo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minimum recommendations for exercise are 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days \u2013 this is something that can be built up to using a pacing approach.&nbsp; Here you will find <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\">NHS physical activity and exercise guidelines for adults aged 19-64<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/physical-activity-guidelines-older-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\">NHS physical activity and exercise guidelines for adults aged 65 and over<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to remember that there is no one exercise or activity that suits everyone. Something that is enjoyable, and suits your lifestyle and routine is much more likely to be continued in the longer term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of your Cardiac Rehabilitation assessment will be about your previous and current levels of exercise and activity and your &nbsp;cardiac rehab practitioner&nbsp;will support you to set some&nbsp;<strong>achievable goals<\/strong>&nbsp;using a&nbsp;<strong>pacing approach<\/strong>&nbsp;information about which you can in the <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/cardiacrehabilitation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2022\/02\/PacingHandout.docx\">Pacing Handout<\/a>.&nbsp;There are many ways to get active and we will guide you in choosing what&#8217;s right for you.&nbsp;There are many ways to get active and we will guide you in choosing what&#8217;s right for you. There are many options to choose from and your health professional will explain what is available for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-exercise-is-important\">Why exercise is important ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&nbsp;is some information that explains why it is important to exercise and stay active<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>What happens when you exercise<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 muscles, including the heart muscle need more blood and oxygen when you exercise \u2013 you supply this to yourself by breathing faster and your heart \/pulse rate goes up to supply the extra oxygenated blood to the body. It is normal to feel that you breathe faster when you increase activity and exercise, and you will notice that you feel warmer as you burn up the extra oxygen as fuel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>How exercise can help<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 exercise has many health benefits, most importantly to reduce the risk of future heart and health problems. Getting fitter means you can do more of what you want to do, improving your quality of life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>How you can monitor the amount of exercise you do<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 learning your own responses to exercise and activity will help you assess whether you are exercising at the correct level. Breathing faster and feeling warmer are normal responses, although you should still be able to speak comfortably while you exercise and the effort should feel moderate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Choosing an exercise routine \u2013<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;it is important to choose something you enjoy.
