{"id":328,"date":"2026-01-29T14:35:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T14:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/camhs\/specialist-teams\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T14:38:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T14:38:03","slug":"specialist-teams","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/camhs\/specialist-teams\/","title":{"rendered":"Specialist Teams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You (or your child) may be referred to a team who have particular skills to help you (or your child).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The CAMHS Intellectual Disability Service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The CAMHS Intellectual Disability Service works with children and young people who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>are between&nbsp;0 to 18 years old<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>and<\/strong>&nbsp;have significant developmental delay or a learning disability (with or without autism)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>and<\/strong>&nbsp;have mental health or complex behavioural problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We also work closely with and support families and carers. As well as an outpatient service, we also offer specialist Early Years and Intensive Treatment Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/camhs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/55\/2022\/08\/CAMHS-LD-Service-Leaflet.docx\">Download the CAMHS Intellectual Learning Disability Service leaflet.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Paediatric Psychology and Liaison Service (PPALS)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The PPALS Service works with children and young people who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>are under the care of a consultant at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>and<\/strong>&nbsp;have a physical health condition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>and<\/strong>&nbsp;are experiencing psychological or behavioural issues related to their physical health condition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>and<\/strong>&nbsp;the difficulties impact significantly on their day-to-day functioning (e.g. disrupted school attendance\/home life, relationship difficulties, clear signs of psychological distress or mental health issues relating to the young person&#8217;s physical symptoms)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/camhs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/55\/2022\/08\/PPALS-leaflet-2021-PDF.pdf\">Download the PPALS leaflet.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Meadows \u2013 CAMHS Specialist Trauma Team<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Meadows is a specialist trauma service within CAMHS. We support children and young people (0\u201318 years old), and the adults who care for them, when they are experiencing emotional, behavioural, or mental health difficulties after traumatic experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We understand that trauma can affect every part of a young person\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our team works in a gentle, compassionate and trauma\u2011informed way, recognising that healing happens best when people feel safe, respected, and understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Who We Support<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We focus on a specific range of trauma experiences. We work with children, young people and families who have been affected by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Child Sexual Abuse or Sexual Assault<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes support for children and young people who have experienced, or have reported, sexual abuse or assault. We also offer support to non\u2011abusing parents and carers, recognising how vital they are in a child\u2019s healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Inappropriate or Problematic Sexual Behaviour<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We offer consultation, assessment and intervention for children or young people showing sexual behaviours that are concerning or inappropriate. This pathway is specifically for those who have <em>not<\/em> been charged with an offence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Refugees, Asylum Seekers, and Unaccompanied Minors<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We support young people who may be struggling as a result of war, displacement, trafficking, exploitation, loss, or other traumatic experiences linked to forced migration. Our work also includes support relating to experiences such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>How We Work<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every young person and family is different, so we tailor our approach to meet individual needs. We work closely with the child or young person, their family, and the professionals around them. We offer a range of trauma informed therapeutic approaches. We also link in with the wider network around a child and young person, as relationships are an important part of recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We welcome enquiries from anyone involved in a child\u2019s wellbeing\u2014schools, social workers, health professionals, and others supporting families affected by the experiences listed above.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You (or your child) may be referred to a team who have particular skills to help you (or your child).
