Saline is a salt water solution that comes in different strengths which will be determined by your healthcare team. The nebuliser machine delivers the solution as an inhaled mist which can be through a mouthpiece or face mask. It is recommended that saline nebulisers should be completed prior to your chest clearance physiotherapy.

There are also mucolytic medications you may be asked to try. These medications help to thin the mucus in your chest with the aim of making it easier to clear. The most common medications are acetylcysteine (also referred to as NACSYS) and and carbocisteine.

Acetylcisteine effervescent tablets should be dissolved in half a glass of water and taken once daily after food. The tablets can affect the absorption of some antibiotics so these should be taken at least 2 hours apart to avoid any interaction.

Carbocisteine capsules are usually taken three to four times a day, depending on symptoms. Some people may benefit from a higher dose initially which can be reduced once symptoms improve. Your prescriber will advise you on a suitable dose.

Both medications can be continued long term to help manage symptoms.

Mucolytics are generally well tolerated but some people may experience headache, stomach upset, skin rashes or allergic reactions. If you experience any adverse effects, please discuss them with your GP or respiratory team.

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493
