{"id":741,"date":"2025-07-30T12:53:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T11:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/bronchiectasis\/?page_id=741"},"modified":"2025-07-30T13:24:26","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T12:24:26","slug":"treatment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/bronchiectasis\/treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"Treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>What are the main treatments in bronchiectasis?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases&nbsp;treatment&nbsp;involves three basic elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regular chest clearance to remove sputum and improve symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoidance of chest infections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prompt antibiotics for chest infections<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Does everybody need the same treatment?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No \u2013 because there are different causes and levels of severity of bronchiectasis and so the treatment planned for you will depend on the cause and severity of your condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/bronchiectasis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/153\/2025\/02\/Seeking-hep-self-managment-plan-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"563\" height=\"811\" src=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/bronchiectasis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/153\/2025\/02\/Seeking-hep-self-managment-plan-1.png\" alt=\"Seeking hep self managment plan 1\" class=\"wp-image-742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/bronchiectasis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/153\/2025\/02\/Seeking-hep-self-managment-plan-1.png 563w, https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/bronchiectasis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/153\/2025\/02\/Seeking-hep-self-managment-plan-1-208x300.png 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>Some patients have very mild disease and they do not always cough up sputum and only have very few chest infections.&nbsp; Patients with&nbsp;more severe bronchiectasis may have symptoms all the time producing large volumes of coloured sputum and often&nbsp;experience frequent chest infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personalised&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chss.org.uk\/documents\/2013\/08\/c4_bronchiectasis-pdf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-management plans&nbsp;<\/a>are very useful in aiding patients to manage their symptoms, manage exacerbations (chest infections) and when to seek help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How are chest infections (exacerbations) treated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>As part of your individual treatment plan we will recommend the specific antibiotic, dose and duration you should take when you have a chest infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all chest infections it is advised that a sputum sample be handed into your GP and then to start antibiotics as soon as possible.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DO NOT WAIT  for the sputum results to come back which can take several days. The reason why you are asked to hand in a sputum sample is because chest infections can be caused by different bacteria (bugs).
