{"id":293,"date":"2024-10-10T11:08:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T10:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/awmt2d\/specialist-weight-management-support\/"},"modified":"2025-05-25T22:29:12","modified_gmt":"2025-05-25T21:29:12","slug":"specialist-weight-management-support","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/awmt2d\/specialist-weight-management-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Specialist Weight Management Support"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A programme which helps you to make small, sustainable lifestyle changes to better manage your weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An initial assessment with a specialist dietitian to determine what type of support is most suitable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 3 month group programme with 9 months of follow up sessions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Behaviour change techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Psychologically informed sessions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access to supported physical activity <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p> As part of this programme we also provide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Group Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the groups, we will cover a range of topics including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Healthy balanced eating &amp; regular eating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meal planning &amp; portion sizes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fad diets &amp; food rules<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing hunger &amp; cravings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physical activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sleep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Environmental factors influencing weight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Barriers to change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weight stigma &amp; body image<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relaxation, self-care &amp; mindfulness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing lapses &amp; unhelpful thinking styles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-monitoring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We will focus on improvements in your health and wellbeing.&nbsp; If you would like to monitor any weight changes, there will be access to weighing scales at every session for those who would like to use them, this is optional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We meet <strong>every 2 weeks for 3 months<\/strong> for a total of 6 sessions initially. Each session lasts one and a half hours. We will send details of your group dates and times a week before your start date, via email or post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may opt to join <strong>online<\/strong> or at one of our <strong>Lothian venues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will confirm the location or link for the online group a week before your start date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group is usually around 10-15 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will follow up after the initial group with further monthly sessions, which will be discussed as part of the programme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"psychology-supportat-initial-assessment-the-dietitian-will-discuss-your-relationship-with-food-to-help-build-a-better-picture-of-this-with-you-you-may-be-referred-to-one-of-our-weight-management-psychologists-after-this-assessment-if-deemed-appropriate-before-starting-the-group-programme\">Psychology support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"psychology-supportat-initial-assessment-the-dietitian-will-discuss-your-relationship-with-food-to-help-build-a-better-picture-of-this-with-you-you-may-be-referred-to-one-of-our-weight-management-psychologists-after-this-assessment-if-deemed-appropriate-before-starting-the-group-programme\">At initial assessment the dietitian will discuss your relationship with food to help build a better picture of this with you. You may be referred to one of our weight management psychologists after this assessment if deemed appropriate before starting the group programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"physical-activity\">Physical activity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The physical activity team consists of Exercise Specialists who run an introduction to exercise 12-week group programme. The group involves a series of simple exercises which are tailored to suit everyone\u2019s level. The group lasts around an hour. Groups are small with a maximum of ten people in the session.
