Sometimes, it can be connected with the heartbeat and sometimes people describe hearing music. It can be there all the time or it can come &amp; go. It can affect anyone, at any time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column supplementary is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tinnitus and mood.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> Most people hardly notice it at all but for some, it can be more problematic and it can disrupt their quality of lives.&nbsp;How you think about your tinnitus can influence your emotional reactions. The brain may interpret the sound of tinnitus as something harmful to your well being. When you respond to tinnitus as a threat, you become stressed and anxious. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column supplementary is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two types of tinnitus:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Objective tinnitus<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>is tinnitus&nbsp;that your GP can hear when they conduct an examination. This type of tinnitus is rare.<br><br><em>Subjective tinnitus<\/em>&nbsp;is tinnitus that only you can hear. You will be asked to perform a hearing test (audiogram) and possibly a pressure test of your ears (tympanogram).\u00a0We will explain why you have become aware of tinnitus and suggest ways you can reduce your awareness of it.<br \/><br \/><strong>If there is a hearing loss, hearing aids have been shown to be beneficial in reducing tinnitus awareness with time.<br \/><\/strong><br \/>If there is normal hearing, we can provide Retrainers devices which look like hearing aids but have integrated sound generation technology to make a gentle sound which disrupts your ability to tune into the tinnitus. In addition, we\u00a0can discuss ways to improve your sleep if the tinnitus is disturbing it.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:35% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"457\" height=\"631\" src=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/audiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/11\/relax_1.png\" alt=\"Person relaxing with a cup of tea\" class=\"wp-image-691 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/audiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/11\/relax_1.png 457w, https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/audiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/11\/relax_1-217x300.png 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>Relaxation <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Relaxation is something that you do, it is not something that is done to you.&nbsp; <br><br>No-one can do it for you, it is something that you must choose to do in any way that suits you.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we relax, it reduces stress arousal levels in the body which is why we feel physically and mentally refreshed after relaxing.&nbsp;People who feel tense often feel tired.&nbsp; It can be done anywhere and at any time.&nbsp;<br><br>You\u2019ll get most benefit if you do it regularly, as part of your daily routine and it is a skill which needs to be learnt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common forms of relaxation are deep or Mindful breathing, progressive muscle relaxation or visualisation\/imagery. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Prevention<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">In many cases, tinnitus is a result of something that can\u2019t be prevented.&nbsp; <br>However, some precautions can help prevent certain kinds of tinnitus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-7420\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Use hearing protection<\/h2><div id=\"ac-7420\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Over&nbsp;time, exposure to loud sounds can damage the nerves in the ears, causing hearing loss and tinnitus. If you use chain saws, are a musician, work in an industry that uses loud machinery or firearms (especially pistols or shotguns), always wear over-the-ear hearing protection. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-7421\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Turn down volume<\/h2><div id=\"ac-7421\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Long term exposure to amplified music with no ear protection or listening to music at very high volume through headphones can cause hearing loss and tinnitus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-7422\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Take care of your cardiovascular health<\/h2><div id=\"ac-7422\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Regular exercise, eating right and taking other steps&nbsp; to keep your blood vessels healthy can help prevent tinnitus linked to blood vessel disorders.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tinnitus is not a disease.
